Volleyball Loses Two at PCC Tourney

Pasadena, CA (Volleyball) -- The Citrus College Volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Friday at the Pasadena City College Tournament. They played a lot of sets, but ended up on the losing ends of both matches falling to the Lancers in four sets and to the Mounties in five.

Citrus kicked off the day against the host Pasadena City College. The Owls actually outhit Pasadena posting a .220 kill percentage compared to the Lancers' .193. Citrus also kept pace defensively with 54 digs to PCC's 58, and out blocking the Lancers 5-4.

What killed Citrus was their serve receive where they committed 15 errors, three times as many as Pasadena as they went down 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, and 19-25. Sophomore Kim Collins finished with a team high 13 kills, while sophomore Breanna Stone registered 16 digs, and freshman Amanda Stone collected 42 assists.

In the second match, Citrus took on another local squad when they played the Mounties. The Owls struggled with their consistency early on, losing leads and falling in the first two sets 22-25 and 24-26. Citrus finally rallied in the third with a 25-23 victory, before blowing out Mt. SAC 25-15 in the fourth set.

With momentum clearly on their side, the Owls raced out to a sizeable lead in the fifth and final set. Mt. SAC rallied late though, scoring the final nine points in a 12-15 loss for Citrus. Sophomore Chelsea Martinez led the Owls with 12 kills in the loss. Breanna Stone dug up a team high 25 balls, while her sister Amanda handed out 37 assists.

With the pair of losses, the Owls drop to 1-2 on the year. Citrus will be off until Friday when they get a tough test when they host Orange Coast College in their home opener. The match is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start in the Owls' Nest.
