Owls Near Error Free in Sweep of Santa Monica

Glendora, CA (Volleyball) -- The Citrus College Volleyball team, ranked #17 in the State, committed just nine total errors and controlled their match from the first serve on Wednesday evening. The Owls rolled as they defeated Santa Monica College 25-15, 25-20, and 25-20.

The first set would see just one tie, when Santa Monica made it 1-1 in the beginning. Citrus then went on a 5-0 run and never looked back. The first set would end with kills from sophomores Alexis Lunney and Kim Collins and an ace from freshman Kayla Eddings.

In the second set, the Corsairs showed some fight taking their first lead of the match at 5-4. Santa Monica would hang on to the lead for the next few points, until they committed three straight errors to give the Owls the lead back 11-10. Citrus maintained the lead, and did so thanks to a number of Santa Monica errors. Citrus would finally close it out when sophomore Chelsey Martinez recorded her sixth kill of the night.

Citrus would run out to a 5-1 lead over Santa Monica in the third set, the fifth point coming on an ace from freshman Ana Bui. The Corsairs would keep it close over the next few points tying the match up three different times at 10, 11, and 12 points respectively. The Owls answered with a 6-0 run though, getting three kills from sophomore Kassidy Greenberg and a kill from Martinez en route to an 18-12 lead and eventually a straight set sweep.

Greenberg would have a strong outing for Citrus converting seven of her nine attack attempts, posting a .778 kill percentage, matching a season high for the Owls. Martinez wound up with a match high 11 kills, while Lunney had 10. Freshman setter Amanda Stone had a match high 30 assists.

Defensively it was a team effort for Citrus. Seven Owls had at least five digs with Stone, Martinez and sophomores Breanna Stone and Yesenia Ibrahim all coming in with a team high eight digs.

Citrus will be back at home on Friday when they host West Los Angeles College. The match is set for a 7:00 PM start time.
