Glendora, CA -- The Citrus College Volleyball team opened up their 2013 season with a straight set sweep over visiting LA Mission College on Friday evening. The Owls used a balanced attack getting at least eight kills from four different athletes en route to the 25-17, 25-17, and 25-21 victory.

The Owls got off to a strong start running out to an 8-3 lead in the first set. Citrus never really sweat after that, as they cruised to the eight point victory, hitting a combined .238. Sophomore Ana Bui helped key the early run with five kills and seven digs in that first set alone.

In the second set, it was much of the same story. The Owls committed one less attack error in the set, and more or less let the Eagles make the mistakes. Freshmen Cassandra Freitag and Danielle Hundley along with sophomore Kayla Eddings accounted for 12 of Citrus' 13 kills in the set, as they all recorded four kills a piece.

In the third and final set, the Eagles proved to be a pesky team to put away. After Citrus ran out to a 5-1 lead, LA Mission pulled back in it, and kept their deficit to the Owls around two points. Citrus would pull away late with a 24-18 advantage, but Mission nearly made it interesting with a small 3-0 run before the Owls finally put the match away for good. Freshman Kaylee Johnson had her best set of the night in that final game, recording three kills and four digs for Citrus.

In the win, the Owls were led by Eddings who did a little bit of everything. Eddings tied Hundley with a team high 10 kills, but also threw in nine digs, a solo block, and an ace. Bui would finish with a team high 14 digs on the night, to go along with eight kills, and number matched by Freitag. Sophomore setter Amanda Stone rounded out the superlatives with 26 assists.

With the win, Citrus improves to 1-0. The Owls will hit the road next week for three separate matches. That three game stretch starts next Wednesday when they travel to Cypress College to take on the Chargers at 7:00 PM.
