Glendora, CA — The Citrus College Volleyball program's upset bid of visiting State #10 Cypress College came up short on Wednesday night in the Owls' home and season opener. Citrus was two points away from taking a 2-1 set lead, before it all came crashing down in an eventual four set loss, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, and 19-25.

As may be expected, the Owls came out of the gate a little tepid, falling behind in the first set 13-9 midway through. Citrus would take advantage of mistakes by the Chargers and get some timely points from sophomore Cassandra Freitag to pull even with Cypress four different times late in the set. The last tied point would be at 19 all, before the Chargers ripped off six of the next seven points to take a 1-0 set lead.

All of the momentum Citrus picked up late in the first set though seemed to carry over into set two, where the Owls jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after back to back kills from sophomore Kyla White and freshman Samantha Jape. The Chargers would climb back in it though, tying the game up at 14 and 15 all, before the Owls used a 4-1 run to put some distance between them and their opponent before eventually turning the tables with a 25-20 win in set two.

The third set proved to be the most competitive of the lot on the night. Citrus ran out to a 5-0 lead, but the Chargers never let things get too out of hand. Citrus would lead throughout the middle of the set, even taking as large as a six point lead 20-14 after a Freitag kill. That quickly disappeared though as the Chargers went on an 11-3 run that killed all of Citrus' momentum and put Cypress in the driver's seat.

In the fourth set it was all Cypress. The Chargers' lead grew to eight multiple times late in the set, before the Owls made a small charge to pull within four at 23-19 after back to back attack errors by the Chargers. The Owls made it tough, but Cypress eventually pulled it out pushing Citrus to 0-1 on the young year.

In the loss, Citrus was paced by sophomore Kyla White who had a game high 23 kills and a game high 18 digs. Freitag added 12 kills and four blocks, while freshman setter Kristen Fox handed out 37 assists.

The Owls will be back out on the floor on Friday when they travel to LA Mission College for a 6:00 PM contest.
