Glendora, CA -- The Citrus College Volleyball team dropped their fifth straight contest on Wednesday evening when they hosted Ventura College in a Western State Conference cross-divisional contest. The Owls fell in a tight five sets, 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, and 10-15.

Things couldn't have gone better for the Owls in the opening set of the match. The two teams traded blows back and forth, until Citrus used a 4-0 run that saw kills from freshman Samantha Jape and sophomore Kyla White put the Owls up 13-9. The Owls continued to push their lead in the first set, committing just a single attack error in their first 19 points, as they won the first set by five.

Citrus looked like they were going to keep it going in the second set when they scored the first four points, off kills by White and freshman LeAna D'Aquila. The Pirates woke up though shortly thereafter, using a major 12-2 run to take a commanding 12-6 lead. The Owls would battle back taking the lead back 21-20 and 22-20 after an ace from freshman Jacqueline Medina and another kill by Jape, but Ventura scored five unanswered to take set number two.

Despite squandering the lead, Citrus again took an early lead in set three. Up 7-5, the Owls watched again as the Pirates used a big run, this one 6-2 to take the lead for themselves. Citrus would briefly retake the lead thanks to an attack error by the Pirates that made it 17-16, but Ventura closed the set out on a 9-4 run to swing all momentum in their favor.

In the fourth, the Owls switched roles, falling behind early 9-5. That's when White began to take over the set. Sophomore Kaylee Johnson started the spree with a kill that made it 9-6, but White then notched four straight kills to put Citrus back on top 10-9. Citrus never lost the lead after that, but they came close letting the Pirates tie the match-up at 17 and 18 all. Each time the Owls got a positive answer as they went on to win by two to force the fifth and deciding set

Citrus' joy would be short lived. Ventura came out in the fifth with seven unanswered to take a commanding lead. The Owls would crawl back to within two scores twice at 8-10 and 9-11 both off Johnson kills, but Ventura put Citrus away for good, scoring four of the final five points of the match.

In the loss, Citrus was led by White's match high 27 kills. Freshman setter Kristen Fox handed out 47 assists, and Medina came up with a team high 17 digs.

With the loss, Citrus falls to 3-8 on the year. The Owls will try and regroup for the start of WSC South play next Wednesday when they host College of the Canyons.
