Glendora, CA -- The last month and half hasn't been pleasant for the Citrus College Volleyball program, which headed into 2014 with expectations high. After suffering losses in eight of their last nine contests, the Owls got what they needed when they exacted some revenge against Antelope Valley College with a straight sweep of the visiting Marauders on Wednesday night.

The first set was error filled on both sides, but Citrus managed to take an early lead, going up 15-10 after a kill from sophomore Kaylee Johnson. Antelope Valley would respond in a big way though, scoring eight straight to turn the tables on the Owls and go up 18-15. Citrus would continue to trail all the way up to 23-21, when a timeout by Head Coach Shin Jung, spurred the Owls on a 4-0 run to close out the set, winning 25-23 after an ace from sophomore Kyla White.

In the second, Citrus kept up the pace, but the Marauders also did too. The match would be tied up at 11-11 midway through, until Citrus earned some separation with a 3-0 run that was all thanks to some errors by the Marauders and a block by Johnson and freshman Samantha Jape. Citrus would cling to that lead for the remainder of the set, never allowing Antelope Valley to get closer than two points en route to a 25-18 win.

Antelope Valley rallied early in the third, scoring four of the first six points and leading early 5-4. That's when the Owls made their move going on an 8-2 run book ended by kills from sophomore Cassandra Freitag and Jape. The Marauders would pull to within one late at 18-19, but Citrus scored six of the final seven points, winning the contest on a kill by Freitag that made it 25-20 in the third.

In the win, Citrus was paced by White's match high 17 kills. Freitag added seven, to go along with a solo block and two assist blocks. Freshman setter Kristen Fox handed out a match high 32 assists, while Johnson and freshman Hailey Pontes tied for the match lead with eight digs.

With the win, Citrus improves to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in WSC South play. The Owls hit the road on Friday to take on West Los Angeles College at 6:00 PM.
