Owls Split to End Trip Down South

San Diego, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Volleyball team ended their trip down South on Saturday afternoon with the second and final day of the 30th Annual Mesa Invitational. The Owls got a split to end the weekend, falling in straight sets to Moorpark College before rallying with a straight sets victory over Cerro Coso College.

In the opening match Citrus dropped in straight sets to the Raiders of Moorpark. The Owls fell 25-18 in the opening set, but got closer to no avail in the second and third sets falling 25-20 in each. Freshman Briana Olvera and sophomore Amy Wilcox and Samantha Jape all had five kills each, but Olvera did it most efficiently with only one error on her resume. Sophomore setter Kristen Fox handed out 15 assists, and sophomore Jacqueline Medina had a team high 18 digs.

After suffering their third straight loss, the Owls finally found themselves on the winning side in their last game of the weekend. Citrus came out swinging right away, beating Cerro Coso 25-15 in the first. The Owls kept it going with a 25-17 winner in the second set. Cerro Coso gave the Owls a run in the third set, but Citrus held on to win 25-21. Jape would lead all offensive players with 11 kills in the win against just three errors, while Olvera was also strong with 10 more kills and just one more error. Fox came up with 23 assists; while freshman Zhari Johnson had a team high eight digs.

With the win and the loss, Citrus moves to 2-5 on the season. The Owls will continue their away trek to start the season over the next two weeks, playing two more games on the road, starting with a trip to Fullerton College on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
