Owls Beat Vaqueros in Four; Win First WSC East Match

Glendale, CA - The Citrus College Volleyball team hit the road on Wednesday evening to take on Glendale College in Western State Conference East Division action. The Owls rallied after losing the first set to win the next three in a 21-25, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-19 victory.

The Owls came out of the gate slow, committing seven attack errors with just nine kills to their name in the first set. Still Citrus was in the set until Glendale pulled away late with the four point win. After committing 19 unforced errors in the first set, Citrus settled in and cut down on the mistakes as the ran away with the second set 25-16, getting three kills each from freshmen Leah Price, Briana Voght, and Amanda Belzl.

Citrus kept it up in the second set, adding three more total team kills, and committing even fewer unforced errors. Sophomore Paige Madkin had four kills on seven attempts in the set, while Price was 3 for 3. In the fourth, the Owls slowed down some, but were able to overcome the Vaqueros. Price and Madkin each had four more kills, with freshman setter Patrisha Sangalang recording 12 assists and five digs in the set alone.

In the win, Voght led all Owls with 12 kills, while Madkin and Price each had 11. Madkin added 13 digs, Price had 11, and Sangalang had a team high 14 to go along with her 50 assists. Freshman Julia Verduzco rounded out the double digit dig night with a season high 11 off the bench.

With the win, Citrus improves to 3-16 overall and 1-1 in WSC East play. The Owls will have arguably their toughest test of the season when they travel to Woodland Hills to take on State #2 Los Angeles Pierce College at 6:00 PM.
