Owls Win Two At Home Tourney

Glendora, CA (Women's Soccer) -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team had a strong start to their home hosted tournament on Friday with a pair of wins. The Owls got things rolling with a 19-15 win over Rio Hondo College and closed it out later in the afternoon with a 12-8 victory over San Diego Mesa College.

Citrus got things off on the right foot against the Roadrunners, opening up the game with a 6-3 lead after one. Rio Hondo would rally outscoring Citrus 5-3 in the second quarter and would trail by just one score 9-8 at the break. The Owls opened up the third like they did the first by outscoring Rio 6-3. In the final quarter the two teams played to a 4-4 draw, and Citrus walked away with a four point win.

Sophomore Meghan Turner was outstanding in the win converting eight of her nine shot attempts. Freshman Candelaria Baca added a pair of goals and handed out six assists, while freshman Mandy Darafeev scored five times in the win.

In the second game, the Owls against jumped out to an early lead, shutting down the Olympians and leading 3-0 after one. Citrus piled it on in the second quarter out-scoring Mesa 5-2 to take an 8-2 lead into the break. In the third quarter, the Owls took their foot off the gas and Mesa matched Citrus 3-3. In the fourth the Olympians actually outscored Citrus 3-1, but the Owls' lead was large enough to sustain the four point victory.

Turner again led the way for Citrus with a team high four goals. Darafeev scored twice, and Baca scored two more times. Freshman Kendra New had a team high four assists in the win.

With the pair of wins, Citrus improves to 10-11 on the year. The Owls will wrap up their tournament on Saturday when they take on El Camino at 12:30 PM and Santa Ana at 4:00 PM.
