San Luis Obispo, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team closed up their opening weekend of play on Saturday at the Cuesta College Tournament. The Owls split their final two games of the weekend, a 9-13 loss to Diablo Valley and a 12-10 win over West Valley, but head back home with good results after going 3-1 on the weekend.

The Owls hit the water slow on Saturday morning, finding themselves in an early 4-0 hole to Diablo Valley in their opening game of the day. Citrus rallied in the second quarter though and went into the break trailing by just two goals 5-3. Diablo Valley began to separate themselves in the third quarter with a two goal advantage, but the Owls closed strong tying DVC with four goals each in the final frame to fall by just four goals. In the loss, Citrus was led by sophomores Kendra New and Candelaria Baca who each scored three goals.

In the second contest of the day, the Owls again came out a little sluggish. They tied with West Valley College 2-2, and fell into a 6-4 hole at the half. In the second half, it was all Citrus. The Owls scored five goals in the third and three more in the fourth, outscoring West Valley 8-4 over the final 16 minutes to claim the two point victory. In the win, Citrus got five goals and an assist from sophomore Lora Marquez-Salgado as well as three more goals from Baca and a pair of scores from sophomore Kaycie Zinkosky.

With the win and the loss, Citrus moves to 3-1 on the year. The Owls will be back in the water this coming Friday when they host a mini-tournament. Citrus takes on defending State Champ Golden West in their first contest of the day starting at 12:30 PM.
