San Luis Obispo, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team opened up their 2013 season on Friday afternoon at the Cuesta College tournament with a pair of victories. The Owls took two, a 6-5 win over Merced College and then a 11-7 victory over Santa Monica College.

In the morning affair against Merced, the Owls took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. Merced tied thing back up before going into the break though as they answered with a 2-1 second quarter sending the game into a 3-3 tie at halftime. In the third quarter, both teams were held to a single score, before the Owls broke out with a 2-1 fourth quarter that secured the victory. Freshman Lauren Quintero scored twice for Citrus in the win, while sophomore Lora Marquez-Salgado handed out a pair of assists.

In the late game against Santa Monica, the Owls controlled the contest. Citrus quickly built up a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and cruised over the final three. The Owls outscored the Corsairs in the second quarter, matched them in the third, and were outscored by just one goal in the fourth, as they picked up the four point win. Sophomores Candelaria Bacca, Marquez-Salgado, and Maria Morales all chipped in with a pair of goals in the victory.

With the pair of wins, Citrus improves to 2-0 on the year. The Owls will be back in the water, early Saturday morning with a game against Diablo Valley College at 8:00 AM. That will be followed by a 11:15 AM contest with West Valley College.
