Glendora, CA -- When the Citrus College Women's Water Polo team hosted a mini-tournament this past Friday in the Citrus Aquatics Center, the Owls experienced both the highs and lows of collegiate competition. Citrus started off the day with a tough 28-5 loss to Golden West College, but bounced back nicely with a 14-10 win over Los Angeles Trade Tech College.

When it came to the defending State Champs, the Owls knew they'd have a tall order. The Owls hung in there as best they could, but the Rustlers were too powerful, leading 18-0 at the break. Citrus would score a trio of goals in the third quarter, matching Golden West' total in the eight minutes of play, but the Rustlers would slam the door shut in the fourth, outscoring Citrus 7-2. Sophomore Lora Marquez-Salgado scored two of Citrus' five goals in the loss.

Later on in the day, Citrus put their first game behind them and came back and played well. The Owls started off a little slow, but picked up momentum as the game went on. Both the Beavers and Owls played to a 3-3 tie after one period of play, but in the second Citrus took command, outscoring Trade Tech 5-1. Leading 8-4 at the break, Citrus continued to put some distance between themselves and the Beavers going up 13-7 after the third, en route to the four point win. Sophomore Kendra New scored a team high four goals in the victory, while fellow sophomore Candelaria Bacca added three more.

With the win and the loss, Citrus improves to 4-2 on the year. The Owls will try and keep some positive momentum going this coming weekend when they participate locally at the Mt. San Antonio College Tournament.
