San Diego, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team had a rough start to the San Diego Women's Water Polo Classic hosted by San Diego Mesa College on Friday. The Owls opened up the day with a close 7-10 loss to San Joaquin Delta College and finished it with a tough 2-13 loss to Grossmont College.

The game opened up with that contest against the Mustangs. Delta jumped out to a 3-2 lead after one quarter and opened up a two point 5-3 lead at the break. Citrus closed the gap in the third, and trailed 6-7, but the Mustangs closed the game out with a 3-1 fourth quarter to secure the three point win. Sophomore Candelaria Baca had three goals, an assist and a pair of kick-outs drawn. Sophomore Kendra New added two scores, while sophomore Lora Marquez-Salgado had a goal, two assists, and seven steals.

In the second game, the Owls kept it close with the Griffins after one quarter of play trailing 4-2. Grossmont shutdown Citrus for the remainder of the game though, while they went on to score three goals each in the second, third, and fourth quarters. Freshman Katherine Cuevas and Baca scored the only goals for the Owls. Sophomore Chaylaine Gutierrez and Marquez-Salgado both had the assists.

With the losses Citrus falls to 5-8 overall. Citrus will be back in the water in San Diego tomorrow at 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
