Cypress & Long Beach, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team took part in the 2013 truWest Battle at Beach hosted by Long Beach City College this past weekend. Every game was a battle for the Owls as they came home with an impressive 2-2 record, and every game a close one.

Citrus opened up the weekend on Friday at Cypress College where they took on San Diego Mesa College and Cerritos College. In the opener against Mesa, the Owls staked themselves to an early 4-1 lead and then hung on for a 6-5 win. Sophomore Candelaria Baca had three assists and sophomore Kendra New scored twice.

In the afternoon game against the Falcons of Cerritos, Citrus took a slim 2-1 lead at the half, but saw Cerritos tie it up and eventually take the lead in the third quarter. In the fourth, each team traded scores, but the Owls came up with the short stick falling 5-4. Baca notched a pair of scores, while freshman goalie Rose Takeuchi stopped 15 shots.

On Saturday, the Owls moved to Long Beach City College and took on Saddleback College in the opener. Citrus put together their best offensive output of the weekend, but it didn't happen until late. The game started out with the two teams playing to a 4-4 tie at the half. In the third quarter, the Gauchos seemingly pulled away going up 10-7 headed into the final frame, but the Owls exploded for five goals, and held Saddleback scoreless on their way to a 12-10 win. Baca led the way with three scores while freshman Kimberly Torres and sophomore Mackenzie Shinall each added two.

In the final contest of the weekend, Citrus drew Southwestern College. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie at the half. The Jaguars gave themselves a one goal lead after the third, and then pulled away in the fourth, with two more scores as the Owls fell 6-3. Sophomore Lora Marquez-Salgado had two of Citrus' three scores and five steals in the loss.

With the two wins and two losses, Citrus' record moves to 12-14 on the season. The Owls will close out their 2013 regular season schedule on Wednesday in a conference match-up at LA Pierce College. The game is set for a 3:30 PM start.
