Owls Go 1-1 on Day Two of Saddleback Invite

Mission Viejo, CA —The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team finished up their first weekend of competition on Saturday afternoon with a 1-1 day. The Owls opened the day with a 12-6 loss to their weekend's host before finishing on a high note with a 7-2 win over East Los Angeles College. 

 The day started off early in the morning against the host Gauchos. Citrus fell behind in the first frame 3-1, and nearly kept pace in the second period going into the break trailing 3-6. Saddleback pulled away in the third though, outscoring Citrus 3-0 to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The Owls would match each of Saddleback's goals in the fourth, but by then it was too late.

In the loss, sophomore Kimberly Torres and freshman Danielle DeHerrera each had a pair of goals. Sophomore Kathleen Gaytan added a pair of assists, while Torres had three steals, and sophomore goalie Rose Takeuchi seven blocks.

In the later game, Citrus took control from the start shutting down the Huskies in the first, while helping themselves to a pair of scores. East Los Angeles would score once in the second, but the Owls scored twice as they went into halftime up 4-1. The two teams matched their second quarter efforts in the third, and the Owls put the game away for good in the fourth, again shutting the Huskies down and getting their final score of the day,

DeHerrera against scored twice more in the win, as did Torres, and freshman Elaine Hodge. Takeuchi stopped eight more shots, and sophomore Lauren Quintero contributed with two assists.

With the win and the loss, Citrus moves to 2-2 on the year. The Owls get back into the water on Wednesday when they host Los Angeles Pierce College at 3:30 PM in their Western State Conference opener.
