San Diego, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo program headed South this weekend to take part in the 17th Annual San Diego Women's Water Polo Classic co-hosted by San Diego Miramar College and San Diego Mesa College. The Owls hit a rough patch while there going 0-4 and losing a pair of really tight contests.

The weekend got off to a tough start with a 7-6 loss to Southwestern College. The Owls opened the game up, outscoring the Jaguars 3-1 in the first quarter. Southwestern rallied in the second to send the game into the half tied up at five goals each. The two schools traded goals in the third, before the Jaguars scored the game winning in the fourth. Sophomore Kimberly Torres and freshman Mary Marie McCreary both scored twice. Freshman Danielle DeHerrera had three steals, while sophomore goalie Rose Takeuchi had 15 blocks.

The Owls would then have to wait nearly six hours before they got back in the water to take on the day's host Miramar. The two teams held each other scoreless in the first frame, before both schools scored twice in the second. The Jets and Owls again were each shutout in the third, before Miramar ran away with the game with a 5-1 fourth for a 7-3 win.  McCreary again led the way offensively with all three scores, while Takeuchi stopped a program record 25 shots in the match.

Saturday started off much like Friday, when the Owls opened up against Cerritos College. Citrus jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the Falcons in the first, but saw Cerritos eat into their lead in the second, before going into the break-up 5-3. In the third, the Falcons again cut in the Owls lead as they went in the fourth with Citrus holding to a 7-6 advantage. Cerritos eventually tied things up in the fourth, outscoring Citrus 3-2, before defeating the Owls in overtime with five scores to two for Citrus for a 11-14 loss. Takeuchi had 16 blocks in the loss, while freshman Kimberly Gaytan and DeHerrera each had three scores.

After the grueling overtime let down, Citrus then had to take on Chaffey College later in the afternoon. Citrus fell behind early, being outscored 5-0 by the Panthers in the first half, before settling in for a 9-2 loss. Freshman Abbey Sorensen and freshman Megan King scored each of Citrus' goals, while Torres came up with three steals.

With the four losses, Citrus falls to 4-10 on the year. The Owls will get back into Western State Conference action on Wednesday when they host Santa Monica College at 3:30 PM, looking to snap their six game losing streak.
