Cypress & Long Beach, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo program hit the road this weekend for their final regular season tournament, the Battle at the Beach hosted by Long Beach City College and Cypress College. It was a 2-2 weekend for the Owls as they earned wins against Pasadena City College and Southwestern College, but dropped a pair of Sierra College and Cypress College.

The weekend started off early Friday morning against Sierra College from Northern California. The Owls traded goals with the Wolverines in the first quarter, but Sierra began to pull away in the second outscoring Citrus 3-1 to take a 4-2 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Sierra scored three more, while shutting out the Owls, which put more than enough distance between them in Citrus as they went on to win 8-3.

In the loss, Citrus got goals from freshmen Brittni Di Carlo and Danielle DeHerrera and another form sophomore Lauren Quintero. Sophomore Kimberly Torres had three steals, while Quintero handed out the only assist for Citrus on the game.

Later in the afternoon, Citrus rallied nicely against nearby Pasadena. The Owls jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first, but made their big move in the second with a 6-0 quarter. Comfortably leading at the half, Citrus outscored the Lancers 6-3 in the final two quarters en route to the 14-4 victory.

Freshman Abbey Sorensen scored a team high five goals in the win, while Torres added three and three assists. DeHerrera also handed out three assists and came up with a  team high four steals in the win.

On Saturday, the Owls moved to Long Beach where they took on one of the weekend's hosts Cypress College. Cypress jumped on the Owls early taking a 5-1 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Chargers put the coup de gras on the Owls with three more goals to Citrus' zero, as Citrus went on to lose 9-5. Di Carlo scored three of Citrus' five goals, while sophomore Katherine Cuevas had two assists.

The weekend ended late early Saturday afternoon when the Owls faced Southwestern College out of the San Diego area. Both teams were held scoreless in the first, but each got on the board in the second, with Citrus scoring twice and taking a 2-1 lead into the break. In the third, the Owls scored twice more, before pulling away with four goals in the fourth, winning 8-2.

Scoring was spread around pretty evenly for the Owls on the final game with five players scoring at least once. Freshmen Megan King and Klarissa Gastelum-Zavala both scored twice. Di Carlo added three assists, while Gastelum-Zavala and DeHerrera each had three steals.

With the 2-2 weekend, Citrus moves to 11-14 on the year. The Owls will close out the regular season on Wednesday with a trip up to Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos of Santa Barbara City College at 5:00 PM. The game will be played at San Marcos High School.
