Owls Season Ends in 5th Place at WSC Championships

Glendora, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo program closed out their 2014 campaign this past weekend with a strong showing at the 2014 Western State Conference Championships. The Owls battled to the end with #4 Los Angeles Valley College in the quarterfinals before settling for a victory over #6 Los Angeles Pierce College in the 5th Place game.

The weekend started off on Thursday morning when the Owls took on LA Valley College. Citrus opened up a 2-0 lead over the Monarchs, but LA valley rallied in the second with three scores, while the Owls were held scoreless. Each team scored three times in the third, with Citrus trailing 5-6 headed into the fourth. In that last eight minutes, LA Valley pulled away outscoring Citrus 5-3 in an 8-11 loss for the Owls.

Freshman Mary Marie McCreary led the way in the loss with three goals, and three kick-outs drawn. Sophomore Kimberly Torres had a goal and three steals, while sophomore goalie Rose Takeuchi had 10 blocks.

Things wrapped on Saturday morning when Citrus battled the Brahmas. Pierce kept it close through the first as each team scored twice, but the Owls began to pull away in the second with a 3-0 quarter. Citrus extended their lead in the third with three more goals, before putting the game away with five more in the fourth for a 14-4 victory.

McCreary again was the leading scorer, with four goals. Freshman Abbey Sorensen added three goals, while freshman Danielle DeHerrera handed out a pair of assists. Takeuchi wrapped up her career with 11 more blocks.

With the win and the loss, Citrus' 2014 record ends up at 12-16 overall and 3-5 in Western State Conference play.
