Glendora, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo program drew a tall task in their Western State Conference opener on Wednesday afternoon when they hosted defending conference champs Santa Barbara City College. The Owls gave it a good effort, but struggled to find the back of the net, converting just 11.1% of their shot attempts in a tough 8-3 loss.

Santa Barbara put the Owls in an early hole with three goals in the first quarter, while the Owls were shutout. Sophomore Mary Marie McCreary changed things around quickly in the second with a goal that made it 3-1, but the Vaqueros wouldn't give up another Citrus goal for the next 13 minutes of game action, while they closed out the second with three more scores to make it 6-1 at the break.

In the third quarter, but teams battled with neither putting another score on the board. Each team would score twice in the fourth, with freshmen Katelyn Rivas and Jessica Carmody striking for the Owls, before Citrus ultimately fell.

In the loss, freshman goalie Nicole Parson came up with nine blocks on 15 shots faced. Parson also had a pair of steals.

With the loss, Citrus drops to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in WSC play. The Owls will be off this weekend, but will return to conference action next Wednesday when they travel to Woodland Hills for a showdown with Los Angeles Pierce College at 3:30 PM.
