San Diego, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo program continued it's 2015 campaign this past weekend when it took part in the 18th Annual San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego Mesa College. The Owls split the weekend, going 2-2 and 1-1 on each day.

Things opened up on Friday afternoon with the weekend's host in Mesa. The Owls took an early 2-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Olympians responded with a big second and third quarters that made it 9-2 in favor of Mesa. The Owls and Olympians would each score twice in the fourth, with Citrus ultimately falling 11-4. Freshman Jessica Carmody paced the Owls effort with two goals, two assists, and three steals.

After a tough first game, Citrus rebounded nicely later in the afternoon against Southwestern College. The Owls led 7-4 at the break, before outscoring the Jaguars 11-1 in the final two for an 18-5 victory. Carmody pumped in three more goals, while freshman Katelyn Rivas added four scores, two assists, and six steals.

On Saturday, Citrus once again came up just shy in the first contest of the day. The Owls fell in the hole 6-4 after one quarter of action against Sierra College. The Owls matched the Wolverines goal for goal in the second, but a 3-1 3rd quarter by Sierra made it 11-7 before they finished off the game in the fourth 12-8. Sophomore Danielle DeHerrera led all scorers in the loss with three goals to go along with a team high five steals.

After another disappointing setback, the Owls closed out the weekend with a statement, defeating Cerritos College 14-4. The Owls held the Falcons to a single score in each quarter, en route to the 10 point victory. Sophomore Mary Marie McCreary scored a trio of goals, as did sophomore Abbey Sorensen and DeHerrera.

With the two wins and two losses, Citrus moves to 11-4 on the season. The Owls will be back in conference action this Wednesday when they host Allan Hancock College at 3:30 PM.
