Glendora, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team played host to eight other colleges from around Southern California over the weekend in their annual home hosted tournament. The Owls were right at home in their home water, going 3-1.

The weekend got off to a good start when Citrus defeated East Los Angeles College 11-2 in the weekend's opening match-up. The Owls opened up a 6-2 lead to start the game and never looked back, outscoring the Huskies 5-0 over the final three quarters of action. Sophomore Abbey Sorensen scored three goals and had two steals in the win, while freshman Jessica Carmody had three goals, an assists and six steals. Sophomore Klarissa Gastelum-Zavala  and freshman Sabrina Fregoso rounded out the superlatives with five steals and four assists respectively.

After opening up the weekend, Citrus would close out the first day of action when they hosted an excellent San Diego Mesa College squad. The Owls dug themselves an early hole after the Olympians jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first. Citrus would hold Mesa to seven goals over the final three quarters, but never really got their offensive going in a 12-3 loss. The three goals on the game were split between Sophomores Danielle DeHerrera, Mary Marie McCreary, and freshman Katelyn Rivas.

On Saturday, Citrus got off to a slow start to Pasadena City College, leading the Lancers by one after one half of play 5-4. Pasadena would keep it close through the third quarter, trailing Citrus by just two scores with eight minutes to go. The Owls would pull away in the fourth though, outscoring the Lancers 4-1 in the 12-7 victory. McCreary led all goal scorers with four on the day. Sophomore Elaine Hodge handed out three assists, while Gastelum-Zavala added four steals.

Citrus would close out the weekend just like they opened it when they took on Rio Hondo College. The Owls scored nine goals in the first quarter and never looked back against the Roadrunners, going on to win 15-4. Carmody poured in five goals, while McCreary added four. Freshman Jenna Elder stopped eight of the 12 shot attempts she faced, while Rivas added a team high four assists.

With the three wins and the loss, Citrus' record moves to 16-5 on the season. The Owls will be at home yet again this coming Wednesday when they host first place Los Angeles Valley College in a crucial Western State Conference contest. The game is set for a 3:30 PM start.
