Cypress, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Water Polo program broke the program record for most wins in a single season over the weekend. The Owls earned their 18th win of the season in their final game of the weekend after going 2-2 on the weekend and finishing in 13th place among arguably the Top 24 teams in the State.

The weekend got off to a rocky start when Citrus opened up the tournament against two of the best teams in the State in Golden West College (13-5) and Mt. San Antonio College (19-3). In the opening contest versus Golden West, the Rustlers eight goals in the opening quarter en route to a 22-9 win over the Owls. Freshman Jessica Carmody scored four goals for the Owls in a losing effort, while sophomore Mary Marie McCreary added three and a trio of drawn kickouts.

Against the Mounties later in the day, things got off to an equally rocky start, with Citrus surrendering 10 goals in the first quarter alone. The Owls managed to hold Mt. SAC scoreless over the second and third quarters, but the game was never in question as Citrus lost 15-5. Against Carmody paced the Owl effort with three goals.

The Owls turned things around on Saturday morning when they defeated conference foe Cuesta College in the opening contest. The Owls and Cougars were knotted at two after one quarter of action, but Cuesta took a 4-3 at the half. Citrus rallied in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 3-2 in the third and 4-3 in the fourth, earning the 10-9 win. Sophomore Abbey Sorensen led all scorers with four goals, while sophomore Danielle DeHerrera came alive with three goals and six steals.

Citrus wrapped things up later in the afternoon when they knocked off Cerritos College 13-8. The Owls actually trailed by two at the break 6-4, but rallied with a 3-1 third and 6-1 fourth to go on to win by five goals. Carmody and sophomore Elaine Hodge would tie for the team lead in goals scored with four each. DeHerrera added a pair of assists and three steals.

With the two wins and two losses, the Owls improve to 18-8 on the season. The 18 wins is a program record for most wins in a season, besting the mark of the 2000 squad who went 17-9-1 on the year. Citrus' season is hopefully far from over, but Citrus does close out the regular season on Wednesday when they travel up to San Luis Obispo for their second contest against the Cougars of Cuesta College in their last three games. The game is scheduled for a 4:15 PM start.
