Women's Polo Surges With Two Wins, Looks Ahead To Elimination Match

Women's Water Polo played a pair of matches Saturday the 20th at the Battle of the Beach Tournament hosted by Long Beach City College. The Owls came out victorious in both matches, topping Saddleback 15-12 and San Diego Mesa 12-9. The wins rounded out the regular season for Citrus, and they now find themselves in a fight for their season as they host LA Valley on Wednesday for a WSC tournament play-in. A win on Wednesday would lock in a spot in the WSC Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Santa Monica College.
In Saturday's first matchup, Citrus went head to head with Saddleback. The Owls saw quite a few great individual performances in the effort. Cameron Schween and Emma Tuck both netted 3 goals for the Owls and Schween added 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 drawn ejections to round out her stat line. Tuck piled on an impressive 5 assists and 3 steals. 6 other Owls chipped in goals including 2 each for Delaney Geppart, Kortney Molle and Francesca Vargas. Geppart also added 3 assists, 5 steals and 2 drawn ejections. Goalie Noel Paz notched 10 saves and 5 steals in the win.
The Owls headed into the San Diego Mesa game without skipping a beat. The Owls came out firing on all cylinders as they quickly went up 4-2 after 1 quarter of play. Citrus continued to press Mesa, extending the lead and holding off a surge by Mesa in the 4th quarter.
Cameron Schween, who is now the team leader in goals for the Owls, went off. She netted 9 goals for Citrus, in what was a bombardment of 14 shots from the Utility player. Schween also contributed an assist, 3 steals and 2 drawn ejections. Goalie Dynalee Huerta blocked 12 shots by Mesa in the victory.
The Owls now face an elimination play-in match to get a shot at the conference title. Citrus will play host to LA Valley at the Citrus Aquatics center this Wednesday at 3:30 PM. The Owls, who are 3-3 in the WSC are looking for a win as they set their sights on extending their season. Coach Jennifer Spalding says her team is up to the challenge. "It's do or die for our girls. They're fired up, it's go time."
